The name of the book derives from the Greek tale of Poseidon, the sea god. Not only has the seahorse been found in art, but mythology as well. It’s curious that the intrigue of seahorses was so widespread except for the East especially since now, seahorses are heavily used in the Asian culture for both eating and medicinal uses. “But, so far, an Asian hippocampus has never been found” (Scale 21).

She notes that these creatures have made an appearance in the carving, sculpture, and paintings throughout history: golden brooch left in King Midas’ tomb, Australian cave drawings, Greek metalworking. Helen Scale starts her book off by describing the impact sea-horses have had on humans.
